Dialog buttons

Dialog buttons

Once you have decided to incorporate cancer screenings as part of your practice, whether as a new billable procedure, or as part of your regular examination process, your patient population needs to know that the screening is available.

We have found these simple 1.25-inch buttons worn by the office staff to be an excellent way to begin the dialog with your patient population about having a screening while they are in the office that day. The front office staff wears the "We look for it" button. When a patient approaches them, the button raises the inevitable question " What do you look for?"  Front desk staff now have the opportunity to respond with "Oral cancer.  30,000 new patients will be diagnosed with this very deadly disease this year. In its early stages it may not be noticeable to you or painful. While you are here today we can give you a thorough screening for oral cancer………….

The "I look for it" button is designed for the hygiene staff and the doctor. Again, the opening discussion is initiated by the patient through an answerable question. The "Dental exams save lives" is a more general button, that while a statement, creates a question in the reader's mind. They normally do not associate dental exams with life threatening events. Dental exams, when they include a complete oral cancer screening, definitely save lives.

"I had one"Pin all your patients who have had a screening each day, and they will carry the message to those they see the rest of the day. Friends and associates who see the button will invariably ask them "one what?". Their answer will relay the message of the importance of getting an annual oral cancer screening, and that your office provided it. Spread the early detection message and promote traffic to your practice at the same time.

VELscope

Early detection of oral lesion through tissue fluorescence

Velscope

Fluorescence visualization assists healthcare professionals in identifying oral abnormalities at the earliest stages.  The VELscope technology platform is based on the direct visualization of tissue fluorescence and the changes that occur when abnormal cells are present. The VELscope hand piece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, causing tissue fluorescence from the surface of the epithelium through to the basal membrane  – where pre-malignant changes typically start. By utilizing special optical filters in the VELscope hand piece the clinician is able to immediately view the different fluorescence signatures in the oral tissue to help differentiate between normal and abnormal cellular activity.

VELscope helps the clinician evaluate oral mucosa for abnormal areas of concern, such as potentially cancerous lesions, which are often undetectable under white light. VELscope is a revolutionary hand-held device offering Dentists and Hygienists an easy-to-use adjunctive screening instrument for early detection of oral mucosal abnormalities. Typically, healthy tissue appears as a bright apple green, while the suspicious regions are identified by a loss of fluorescence, which thus appear dark. When used in combination with white light examination, VELscope is the new standard of care for early detection in oral mucosal screening.

Healthy tissue fluorescence

VELscope provides for a more effective oral mucosal screening protocol with immediate benefits for the patient, clinician and practice. When used as an adjunctive aid in combination with traditional oral cancer examination procedures, VELscope facilitates the early discovery and visualization of mucosal abnormalities prior to surface exposure that may be, or may lead to, oral cancer. In less than 5 minutes, with no rinses required, a VELscope examination helps oral healthcare professionals assure their patients that the standard of care for oral mucosal screening has been utilized. Through the CDT-2005 code D04316, insurance companies are recognizing VELscope as an adjunctive screening device. VELscope combines minimal per-patient costs with more effective screening.

ViziLite Plus Examination Tools

Vizilite

The ViziLite Plus exam can help you identify abnormal tissue that might develop into oral cancer, or may itself already be a malignancy. It is a simple, non invasive screening tool, that will help you more easily visualize suspect tissues in the mouths of your patients.

ViziLite Plus examinations are performed immediately following a regular visual and tactile examination. As an adjunct to these exams, lesions which may have gone unnoticed to the naked eye will be more visible, and contribute to the thoroughness of your screening process.

An annual ViziLite Plus exam, in combination with a regular visual and tactile examination, provides a comprehensive oral screening procedure for patients at increased risk for oral cancer. The ViziLite Plus exam is painless and fast, and could help you save a life.

How ViziLite Works

As with most serious diseases, early detection is the key to successful outcomes. Unfortunately, the problem with oral cancer is that in its early stages, it may not be painful or obvious. Patients may not complain of a problem. Without a complete annual exam, these very subtle pre cancerous and early cancers may go unnoticed and allow the disease to progress to an advanced stage killer. ViziLite Plus technology assists dental and medical professional in seeing abnormal tissue in the mouth, often more clearly than a visual examination with the naked eye. Subtle changes in tissue color which may miss your attention are more easily visualized with the light reflected from the VisiLite device.

As ViziLite Plus passes over oral tissue that has been treated with the rinse solution, normal healthy tissue will absorb the light and appear dark, abnormal tissues will appear white. The purpose of using ViziLite Plus is to identify tissue changes at their earliest stage; once abnormal tissue has been identified it should be watched no longer than 14 days, to see if resolution takes place. If it does not, the patient is referred to an oral medicine specialist or surgeon for biopsy and conclusive diagnosis. Delays in referral and diagnosis allow the patient's disease to progress to a later stage illness and poorer long term outcomes. Properly applied, this system allows you to find dangerous disease at the earliest and most curable stages.

TBlue630 is a patented, pharmaceutical-grade toluidine blue-based metachromatic dye.  It is used to further evaluate and closely monitor changes in ViziLite-identified lesions.  It has been proposed that living cells will differentially accumulate toluidine blue based on parameters related to metabolic activity.  TBlue630, packaged in an easy to use 3-swab system, provides the deep blue staining that allows ViziLite-identified lesions to be seen clearly under normal light.

Caphosol

Relieves mucositis discomfort and promotes healing

Caphosol

CAPHOSOL, a topical oral agent, is a U.S. patented, prescription medical device that lubricates the mucosa and helps maintain the integrity of the oral cavity through its mineralizing potential. The distinguishing feature of CAPHOSOL is its high concentrations of calcium and phosphate ions, which are hypothesized to exert their beneficial effects by diffusing into intracellular spaces in the epithelium and permeating the mucosal lesion in mucositis. Calcium ions play a crucial role in several aspects of the inflammatory process, the blood clotting cascade, and tissue repair and phosphate ions may be a valuable supplemental source of phosphates for damaged mucosal surfaces.
